Vivarium: The Hunte

A River through Northern German Landscapes

The Hunte originates at the edge of the Central German Uplands and flows all the way to the North Sea coast. Stretching over 100 kilometres, it connects all three landscapes of Lower Saxony: the moor, the geest and the marsh. Along its winding path, the water transforms from clear freshwater to salty brackish water.

Reflecting these natural conditions, the aquariums display the habitats found in various sections of the river. The facility houses 18 cold-water tanks, all designed to be easily viewable for children.

The biodiversity of the River Hunte is vast and varied. Up close, you can see native whitefish species originally from Lake Dümmer. Coastal inhabitants like sea robins, catsharks and European seabass are also featured. Naturally, humans have been closely connected to the river and its flora and fauna for thousands of years. Their influence is highlighted in the aquarium, showcasing roles as fishers or landscape designers.
