Digitalization
The future awaits
Ongoing digitalization of society mean that museums are also having to face interesting questions. How can digital offerings enhance the exhibition experience? How can museum work be made easier through digitalization? How can devices like smartphones help us convey content to you quickly and easily?Digitalization is an exciting challenge that we are gradually embracing.
Below are our current projects on the topic of digitalization.

Model Digitalization of Nature and Cultural Heritage in Oldenburg (MoDi)
Digitalization of cultural heritage objects is a current and societally relevant task. It serves the objective documentation, preservation, research and presentation of historically relevant artifacts and processes. In particular, the documentation of three-dimensional, complex objects requires collaboration between museums and technical institutions, in this case, Jade University of Applied Sciences in Oldenburg. In the project, funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung (Volkswagen Foundation), expertise is brought together to develop exemplary procedures and make them available to other institutions.

The digitization of fragile objects will be explored using case studies from the collection of the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch. These include, for example, a coat made of seal intestines or bog bodies, some of which are stored in liquid. However, a new 3D digitization method must also be developed for the analysis of historical glass plates in order to secure the inventory. Two megalithic tombs, some of whose excavation documentation was destroyed during the war, serve as a case study.
The technical implementation is being researched and tested as part of a dissertation project at the Jade University of Applied Sciences in Oldenburg. If successfully implemented, the methods developed could be applied to comparable collections for the 3D reconstruction of cultural assets.
A further dissertation project at the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch Oldenburg will critically reflect on national and international digitization projects in order to investigate the following questions, among others: How has the relationship between the ‘original’ and the ‘copy’ changed in the digital age? Do national definitions of a museum and the ‘real’ influence the handling of digitization on an institutional level?
