Embracing Diversity

A 360°view for an open museum

Living together in Germany is shaped by migration, and it will continue to be so in the future. Today, cities in particular are characterised by great diversity. Cultural institutions can make this cultural diversity visible and tangible. This is where the nationwide program “360° – Fund for Cultures of the New Urban Society” (German: 360° – Fonds für Kulturen der neuen Stadtgesellschaft) comes in, with a total of 39 pilot projects: from 2018 to 2023, 16 museums, 13 theatres, 8 libraries, one music school and one symphony orchestra are being supported with a total of 13.9 million euros.
Funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes, the German Federal Cultural Foundation, this programme supports cultural institutions in engaging more intensively with migration and cultural diversity topics as promising future issues and creating new entry points and visibility for groups in society that have not been adequately reached until now. The pilot programme promotes a variety of approaches aimed at diversity-related inclusivity in programmes, audiences and staffing. The projects aim to complement the existing provisions in cultural institutions and also make these institutions attractive to new visitors and employees. The programme takes an intersectional approach, considering not only ethnic origin but also age, disability, gender identity and social background.

Outreach and Post-migrant Perspectives

As part of the 360° program, the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch Oldenburg develops formats in dialogue with the public tailored to the needs, interests and life and experience worlds of society in the city and region. Various cooperation partners, such as non-for-profit, charitable associations, are constantly involved in the processes and engage in dynamic exchange with nature and humans.

Beyond the transcultural dialogue, the 360° programme at the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch strives to follow a critical approach to societal structures when developing collaborations, formats, and topics, aiming to avoid the reproduction of prejudices. This occurs by developing, for instance, post-migrant perspectives as cross-cutting themes, such as through the connection to topics like sustainability, life and nature. In addition to a variety of offers that provide space for dialogues and exchanges for adults, such as lectures or film screenings with follow-up discussions, multilingual offerings for children and adults have already been established. The development of such formats thus addresses the needs of an increasingly diverse migrant society.

The Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch is part of the “Charta der Vielfalt” (English: “Charta of Diversity”), which advocates for more recognition, appreciation and inclusion of diversity in the workplace, as well as part of the nationwide cultural alliance "DIE VIELEN" (English: “THE MANY”).

Our new design

Considering diversity

Our new website is part of an exciting transformation. Over the past two years, we have worked intensively on a new website that invites everyone to experience and learn together and presents the special quality of our museum's collection. The transformation process is part of our 360° opening strategy, which is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation and with which we want to open up our museum to a diverse society.
