Our Mission Statement

The “Lower Saxony State Museums Oldenburg” organisation encompasses the Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte (State Museum for Art and Cultural History); Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch (State Museum of Nature and Humans), and the Oldenburg Schlossgarten (Palace Garden) with the Eversten Holz (Eversten Wood)—outstanding cultural institutions of the Oldenburg region. This historically protected ensemble is an indispensable part of regional identity and a cultural tourism attraction of significant appeal. Our institutions are characterized by the long history of the museum buildings with their diverse, precious and unique collections as well as the extensive legacy of the Palace Garden as a quintessential English landscape garden and the Eversten Wood. Supported by funding from the State of Lower Saxony (and for the Palace Garden, also by the City of Oldenburg), we ensure the preservation of these cultural treasures and continually work to develop them further. We collect, preserve, research and present cultural values from various epochs, fostering cultural diversity and engaging with artistic, cultural-historical, natural-scientific, archaeological and ethnological themes. Our mission is carried out on behalf of society, adhering to scientific standards while considering the needs and interests of our visitors. Over one hundred professionals in science, administration, crafts, technology and from the service sector work collaboratively to continually improve our products and services. We share our knowledge and experience both internally and externally. Our three organisational units operate autonomously externally but are closely interconnected internally, particularly in utilising shared resources. We take responsibility at every level for the wider organisation as a whole, ensuring that we collectively achieve our goals. Therefore, we work in an interdisciplinary manner, support one another, find synergies, use our resources prudently and leverage the strengths of the individual institutions. Shared infrastructure allows us to perform our tasks effectively and efficiently, making our achievements also shared successes. Decisions regarding strategic objectives, plans and exhibition projects are made transparently, enabling both guests and staff to align with and rely on them early on. We maintain a culture of clear objectives and decision transparency. Relevant information is accessible to all employees. A respectful working environment is the foundation of our collaboration. We value the opinions and expertise of every team member, communicate directly and work together to find solutions by sharing ideas, knowledge and insights. We welcome suggestions for improvement and design workflows in a way by which all staff members can identify. We foster a positive work atmosphere to achieve high motivation and satisfaction. Enjoyment of work and motivation drive us to continually improve. To fulfil our mission, we aim to attract and retain motivated, committed and qualified staff. Anticipating current and future challenges, we engage in proactive workforce planning and offer opportunities for professional development to every employee. We collaborate with partners from public, academic, cultural and private institutions for mutual benefit. Partnerships with businesses and our support associations are particularly important; they enable projects and activities to occur through their assistance. In balancing tradition and modernity, we are committed to passing on our knowledge, achievements and treasures to future generations while remaining open to societal changes, including contemporary visitor engagement.
