Inspiring Young People for Science

What does STEM actually mean? Humanity faces major challenges due to climate change and the loss of biodiversity, both caused by us. STEM competencies and knowledge are tools to understand many modern issues and find solutions. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. These fields play a role for many young people in school and everyday life. And the goal is to ignite and foster the joy of research and discovery!

AHOI_MINT

That’s why we are part of the STEM Cluster NorthWest AHOI_MINT. We aim to give all young people between the ages of 10 and 16 in northwestern Lower Saxony access to exciting opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The project is largely supported by the partner organizations: University of Oldenburg, Research Centre NorthWest for Students e.V., Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch Oldenburg, OFFIS e.V. – Institute for Computer Science, and the Schlaues Haus Oldenburg, which coordinates the project. The Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch has developed the MINTmach Werkstatt (STEM workshop group).

The MINTmach Werkstatt at the museum

With its core themes of archaeology and natural history, the Landesmuseum Natur und Mensch offers many connections to STEM topics. As an established extracurricular learning venue in the region, we expand our provisions with the MINTmach Werkstatt (English: STEM workshop):

Children and young people can try out and expand their own skills, be brave(er), and experience themselves as competent – all of this in the MINTmach Werkstatt (STEM workshop). We start from everyday STEM questions and create opportunities for research, construction, experimentation, microscopy, and more. The topics are varied, such as: “Building Bridges”, “Insect Diversity”, “Exploring Trees” or “Making Fire”.

The MINTmach Werkstatt (STEM workshop) takes place at the museum and other locations. In projects, we work with schools, recreational centres, associations or other institutions. We also offer various and multi-day workshops on weekends or during holidays focusing on STEM topics.
